Default And so it ENDS.. The last day of (Snow White) my EJ1 civic.. |Khris H.|

Had a great day at the dragstrip in Montgomery today for Import Face-Off.. Got several runs in and even ran my bet time ive ever run with my new setup 14.6 @ 95mph.. Too bad my day didnt end on such a high note..

On the way home from the track about 50miles away from my destination my car was low on gas so i got off the next exit and fulled my tank up.. Then i got back on the highway and not even three minutes into my drive my brother and I smell gas really strong, so we start wondering where the hell the smell was coming from.. Obviously thinking it couldnt be my car we dismissed it but the smell was strong.. Two seconds later my brother YELLS "the car is on FIRE", im like WTF so he says again, "the car is on FIRE".. I then throw on my turn signal and flew onto the shoulder of the highway and stop the car and cut the engine off.. my brother dives out the car and i dive out the passenger side right behind him to see this..

    The rest is history..

Wow that is so sad! Hopefully you're ok(emotionally) and atleast you all got out before it went up in flames. So I'm guessing the car is going to be totaled? What happened and what are you going to do now? Rebuild the car, get a new one?

Glad that the fire got put out at least, would have been worse if the whole car went up in flames. I recently started carrying a small fire extinguisher behind my seat now.

I think you should get it running again, but leave the charred engine bay and hood....I bet you could start a new trend and all the hondas would be setting their cars on fire just to get what you got by accident.

damn! same EXACT thing happened to my 1st db8. caught on fire like that like 3 mins after i put gas in it. real similar scenario except mine was boosted. car was totalled bc the wires were all melted, although the motor itself was actually fine once we pulled it out of the car. you can def rebuild! glad everyone is ok though...

Here is my theory. The fuel lines that run under the car are rubber flex hoses that go into hard lines past the firewall, those hoses are just about right above your catalytic converter, mounted only right above a hard plastic (shield)....on the age of these cars there is a good chance that rubber fuel line was dry-rotted, so you had a very small leak, maybe almost unnoticeable with the car off since you were on the highway and track, and hard driving it. you were pushing more fuel through it. (that is why you could smell the gasoline fumes before you saw flames).

Your exhaust right there around the downpipe and the catalytic converter itself can heat up well enough especially hard driving it either at the track or on the highway, to ignite the fumes that were leaking from that fuel line, it wouldn't even have to be noticeable liquid gasoline "leak"... with enough fumes, it will cause it to ignite.

I narrowly avoided this situation myself after driving home from work. a couple of hours after driving my car I went into the garage to get something and I smelt gasoline, alot of it...it smelt like a fucking lawnmower. I looked under my car and I only saw about a dime sized drop of gasoline on the floor, but it smelled like I just cut my lawn with it.

I didnt even attempt to drive it...I got it towed to a lift to fix it. I am not saying everyone should freak out and get hardlines run all the way to the gas tank (I didnt, I just ordered a new rubber line from the dealership), but next time you are under your car...might be worth checking them for dry rot.

Powerful shots Kris. I think it says something about your dedication when you can take such great photos of a seemingly bad situation.

I mean your baby is burning in front of your eyes and you kept yourself composed enough to take pictures of it. I think that is the silver lining in all this.

I'm sorry to hear about this but when I read your facebook my first thought was you and your brother. I'm glad you guys made it out safe.

On the flip side looks like you need a hood fenders wiring harness and some hoses.

I bet you can have it back on the road minus paintwork for under $600

Unfortunately you made it worse by opening the hood and leaving it open.
